The honest reality
Unlike a forgotten bank password, there is no "forgot my seed phrase" button and no company that can reset it for you. The seed phrase mathematically generates your private keys — whoever controls it controls the funds, and there is no central party who can override that.
If you've completely lost your seed phrase and have no backup, the funds are, in almost all realistic cases, permanently inaccessible. This is difficult to hear, but it's important to be honest about it rather than chase false hope.

What you can actually try
- Check every possible backup location first — old notebooks, safety deposit boxes, password managers, or a second device where it might have been written down.
- If you remember most of the phrase (missing one or two words), some technical recovery tools can attempt to brute-force the missing words, though this is only computationally feasible for a very small number of missing words.
- If funds are still on an exchange (not yet withdrawn to a personal wallet), account recovery through the exchange's standard identity verification process may still work — this is different from a self-custody wallet.

Watch out for "recovery service" scams
Searching for help after losing access to funds makes people especially vulnerable to scams that prey on desperation.
Red flag: anyone who contacts you claiming they can "recover" your seed phrase or wallet for an upfront fee is running a scam. No legitimate service has this capability, because no one but you ever had the phrase in the first place.

How to prevent this going forward
- Write your seed phrase on paper or metal, never store it as a photo, text file, or cloud note.
- Keep at least two copies in physically separate, secure locations, in case of fire, flood, or theft at one location.
- Consider a metal backup plate for long-term storage — paper degrades and can be destroyed easily by water or fire.
- Never digitize it, even "just to have a backup" — a digital copy defeats much of the security a seed phrase is meant to provide.

Can a company or exchange help me recover a lost seed phrase?
